The part I never liked about Christians, before I came to believe, was Christian hypocrisy.
The definition of hypocrisy is sanctimonious, which is particular accurate in this context. Think about one of the most delicate matters of our time: the abuse of children by pastors. Why does it bother us so much? We see the pastor as a representative of something higher. The higher the claim, the higher the fall, the higher our disgust (“the filthy hypocrite, that calls itself a priest”).
At least we have an answer why Christian hypocrisy bothers so much.
So why don’t Christians stop pretending to be a representative of something higher? They break their rules just as everyone else.
If Christianity does not make any sense, then Christians must immediate stop all pretensions. But if Christianity does make sense, equals believing in Christ being a Christian hypocrite?
What does that mean?
Turning Christian, does not mean ‘turning holy’. It might take a while, but turning Christian means ‘turning full of sin’. We acknowledge that we are self-centered, greedy, etc. and for that reason we need Christ, who carried our sin for us. Reading the Bible only convinces that about everything we do and think is not “loving God above all and our neighbors as ourselves”. I love myself above all and my neighbor preferably not at all.
Any other idea about Christianity, the church, some Christian friend or acquaintance other than ‘being full of sin and for that reason being in need of Christs forgiveness’ is wrong. Christians believe there is a Godly world, a higher order, true right and wrong. However, since we fail to live up to this norm, we need Christ, every day. To make Christianity even more complex, Christ is not dead, nor a absent deistic God, but a God who interacts with us, in answer to our prayer. Turning Christian is above all the end my own direction and the start of following Gods direction.
So the right Christian attitude is: humility. Because mankind has fallen. We are fallen. Me, you, all of us. There is no such thing as better or worse; as the Bible quotes “but whoever does not believe is condemned already”. Christianity is the conviction that we live on a sinking ship. Irritation as a result of Christian hypocrisy is probably the result of an attitude other than humility.
But ultimately, why are Christians hypocrite? Because they are sinners, not saints.
