Praying is talking to God. It is easy why we should not pray. If God doesn’t exist, there is no need.
If God exists, why should we talk to God? (The absence of) our talking to God describes why.
If we don’t pray, we probably don’t believe in the existence of God. Simple as that.
We might also not believe in the existence of God, and pray. Maybe we like the idea of an almighty power we can talk to, so we talk? I cannot think of any reason why a sane man would do so.
We might believe in the existence of God, but don’t pray. It means that we don’t believe that God interacts with the world in relation to our prayer. Or that we don’t know God well enough.
We can also pray, because we believe in God. This is actually not true. We pray because who we believe God is, what God can do and how God should be interacted with. This could be:
- God is the reason of existence. The expression is probably awe or thankfulness.
- God is holy and almighty. The expression is probably worship.
- God influences our life. The expression is probably asking.
- God forgives sins. The expression is probably asking for forgiveness.
- And so on.
This is why I am Christian. God is existent, alive, mighty and related to everything. He helps if we ask Him. But to see His reaction in response to our prayer, we must already believe that it was Gods, who answered. Via people, laws of nature, our thinking, peace of mind, etc.
Far-fetched? That depends on your believe about God.
